A Good Word for Today: Faith

What do we mean by the word “faith”? A sense of optimism and hope? A generally positive outlook on life? Is it religious belief? Is faith a “leap in the dark”? Is it blind (as in “blind faith”)? Is faith the opposite of science or reason?

While the word “faith” is often used in different ways, the Bible usually uses the word “faith” to mean “trust.” We all have people, places and ideas in our life that we trust (hopefully with good reason). Christian faith is trusting God–trusting that He is good; trusting that He cares for you; trusting that He has good plans for your life. Specifically, it is trusting in Jesus—trusting in His words, trusting in His promises, trusting in His death and resurrection. Trusting that He came to bring you grace.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all of your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:5,6
