New Hope Presbyterian Church is committed to godly “shepherd leadership” by a body of elders elected by the congregation.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the only Head and Ruler of the Church, and that He shepherds, tends, protects, leads and cares for His people by His Spirit and His Word through godly church leadership.
We believe that, from the time of Abraham in the Old Testament, God’s church has been led by wise elders–men gifted by God and called to govern his church (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9 ESV). We believe that it is the responsibility of the elders to work together to lead, protect, encourage, and support the spiritual health and welfare of the congregation (Acts 20:17,28; 1 Peter 5:1-4 ESV). We believe that, among the elders, some are set apart especially for preaching and teaching (1 Timothy 5:17 ESV).
“So I exhort the elders among you…shepherd the flock of God that is among you…” (1 Peter 5:1,2) ESV
“…those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves….” (1 Timothy 3:13) ESV
