Sing These Hymns Before Christmas

Human beings sing. We can’t stop singing. If you listen carefully, you will notice that we tend to sing about what has captured our hearts.

What has captured your heart this Christmas? We have no better reason to sing than this: The Savior is born to live, die, and rise again to fix what sin has broken!

God commands us to sing (see Ephesians 5:18–19 and Colossians 3:16), so I want to share excerpts from my six favorite Christmas hymns with you and your family. Read the beautiful words first before setting them to music, then pray that as you sing, the Lord will allow these words to capture your heart!

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Christ, by highest heav’n adored:
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the virgin’s womb.

Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne

Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown,
When Thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehem’s home was there found no room
For Thy holy nativity.

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
there is room in my heart for thee.

Heaven’s arches rang when the angels sang,
Proclaiming Thy royal degree;
But of lowly birth didst Thou come to earth,
And in great humility.

The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest
In the shade of the forest tree;
But Thy couch was the sod, O Thou Son of God,
In the deserts of Galilee.

3. Find a verse or passage from Scripture that matches and supports your selected hymn. How does this portion of God’s Word bring you encouragement today, and why?

4. Read the hymn and supporting Scripture again. What should challenge and convict you most? Where are you falling short of God’s standard? Be specific.
